Bowie’s estate sells rights worth $250 million to Warner Music Group. The rights include David Bowie’s entire catalogue spanning six decades including hits such as Fame, Heroes, Let’s Dance and The Man Who Sold The World.
David Bowie an iconic musician from the 20th and 21st century died at age 69 in 2016. The deal between David Bowie’s estate and Warner Music Group includes songs from Bowie’s 26 studio albums during his life as well as Bowie’s posthumous album release – Toy.
The financial terms of the deal weren’t confirmed but there was a leak that t he purchase was made for around $250 million. Bowie rocketed to fame in Britain in 1969 with Space Oddity, the words from the song were inspired after he watched Stanley Kubrick’s film, 2001: A Space Odyssey while baked. What really launched Bowie’s career was his 1972 portrayal of the rock envoy Ziggy Stardust.
Above all Blackstar was released on 8 January 2016, Bowie’s 69th birthday, and was met with critical acclaim. Following his death on 10th January, Visconti revealed that Bowie had planned the album to be his swan song, and a “parting gift” for his fans before his death.

Several reporters and critics subsequently noted that most of the lyrics on the album seem to revolve around his impending death, with CNN noting that the album “reveals a man who appears to be grappling with his own mortality”. Visconti later said that Bowie had been planning a post-Blackstar album, and had written and recorded demo versions of five songs in his final weeks, suggesting that Bowie believed he had a few months left. The day following his death, online viewing of Bowie’s music skyrocketed, breaking the record for Vevo’s most viewed artist in a single day.
Additionally On 15th January, Blackstar debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart; nineteen of his albums were in the UK Top 100 Albums Chart, and thirteen singles were in the UK Top 100 Singles Chart. Blackstar also debuted at number one on album charts around the world, including Australia, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, and the US Billboard 200.
