Nirvana “Smells Like Teen Spirit” hits over 1 billion listens on SpotifyRodney
Nirvana’s biggest hit ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ first smashed out on the airways on 27th August 1991. It became the most recognisable and well bloody known songs ever.
Now their smash hit has hit over one billion streams on Spotify. That makes it the second song from the 1990s to hit one billion streams. The first song from 90s to hit one billion listens was “Wonderwall” by the Brit-Pop group Oasis.
Spotify have created a Billions Club playlist for songs that have hit the billion mile stone. Having a look at the list makes me thing the playlist should have been called ‘Songs for the lowest denominator’. Check it out below:
The music video clip for “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Is an iconic clip on it’s own. It’s often highlighted as the Gen’s X grunge anthem. The clip has now reached over 1 billion views on the official YouTube video.
Sounds Like Teen Spirits
The song has been covered and parodied by many. One of the most well known parodies of the song is by Weird Al Yankovic with his “Smells Like Nirvana” take. The clip is pretty well done too. There’s even a cover done in a classical latin style.
And who can forget Pansy Division’s funny take with ‘Smells Like Queer Spirit’
A month ago, bassist from Nirvana Krist Novioselic talked of a potential reissue of Nirvana’s classic ‘Nevermind’ album. This will be a celebration of its 30th Anniversary later in September 2021. Novoselic spoke to Uncut alongside drummer Dave Grohl.
“We’re going to have the 30-year ‘Nevermind’, but we’re still putting it together,” Novoselic teased of the forthcoming reissue, which he hinted will feature rare material. “It’s kind of late! What’s on it? You’ll see, I don’t want to spoil the surprise!”
He added “The anniversary is really for the fans and what the album means to them. If it helps people make some sense of the world, that’s great. You have to figure it out for yourself, though.”
Grohl revealed that the surviving members of Nirvana still regularly meet up and jam together, which has led to some “really cool” recording sessions.
