Principal loves Iron Maiden

Square parents of a Canadian high school are trying to turf a principal because she posted images on social media showing her love of Iron Maiden.

The parents flocked to change.org for a petition to transfer the principal Sharon Burns from Eden High School. The petition has now been removed but had around 400 signatures. The sulking started from when Mrs Sharon Burns shared a picture of herself in front of Iron Maiden merch with her posing with the customary rock “devil horns” hand gesture. The image was posted to a public instagram account used for school purposes. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with showing your love of any music.

It was reported the original petition was started by Debbi Lynn and it said:

“As concerned parents with impressionable children at Eden High School in St. Catharines, Ontario, we are deeply disturbed that the principal assigned to the school blatantly showed Satanic symbols and her allegiance to Satanic practices on her public social media platforms where all the students can see them under @edenprincipal (not her personal account)”

There’s been a counter-petition that’s popped up and it’s still going. The petition is called “We Need Mrs. Burns” and it has smashed more than 18,000 signatures. It reads:

Recently, there has been a petition going around to “remove” the principal of eden high school. It is ridiculous that a couple of parents only judge her role as a principal only based on an instagram post. (About liking the band Iron Maiden. That’s it.) Eden High School is a public school. Not a Christian school. If you somehow don’t like the principal of your child, grandchild, relative etc.’s school, then send them to another one.

The principal has made so many efforts to remind students that eden is a diverse place. She has even turned a whole room into a prayer room for students who are practicing religions other than christianity, like practicing Islam. She’s made eden a safe space for so many people. And She spreads nothing but love and kindness, and is probably one of the best and most enthusiastic principals the school has ever had. In the 1980s the “Satanic Panic” was common. Paranoia and anxieties grew over social change and and christian fundamentalism grew and took their message against art related to spirits, dragons, monsters and anything “devilish”. Most metal music was often seen as the work of the devil.
