Spencer Elden, the man who was the baby in Nirvana's Nevermind album cover is suing for sexual exploitation. Elden has recently filed a lawsuit against Nirvana and Kurt Cobain's estate. For instance, he claims the image of a naked baby reaching for a dollar in a pool violated child pornography statues.
Elden is seeking $150,000 from each of the companies involved. It says all members of Nirvana "knowingly produced, possessed and advertised commercial child pornography depicting Spencer. They knowingly received value in exchange for doing so."
In addition, Elden’s lawyer said Elden has asked "For Nirvana to redact the images of his genitalia from the album cover."
In any case, this comes at a time when Nevermind celebrates its 30th anniversary on 24th September. Nevermind is one of the world's most recognised albums. It's sold over 30 million copies and it was a huge influence on grunge music.
Nevermind the bollocks
In addition, the suit alleges that Kurt Cobain "agreed to redact Spencer’s image by releasing the album with a sticker strategically placed over Spencer's genitals. The sticker read 'If you're offended by this, you must be a closet pedophile.'" However, the sticker was never incorporated. Spencer Elden hopes the band will make good on this alleged agreement for future releases. Mabie [Lawyer] told the Associated Press, "If there is a 30th anniversary rerelease, [Elden] wants for the entire world not to see his genitals."
Over the years Spencer Elden has recreated the Nevermind album many times. However he now appears to have changed his mind. In 2016 he tells GQ Australia "Recently I've been thinking. ''What if I wasn't okay with my freaking penis being shown to everybody?'" He continued "I didn’t really have a choice."
In conclusion, I think the 30th anniversary should have the sticker. Eden could pose for it again, if he chooses to. With clothes on.
