Dr Gordi the Muso and Medic
Dr Gordi the great muso and great medic. Gordi (Sophie Payten Born 28th December 1992) has been receiving national and international praise after she has been playing across Sydney whilst studying at uni and releasing her tracks online with Triple J's Unearthed radio. Her music is featured in several television series and films. Her single "Can We Work It Out" featured in "The Vampire Diaries" and "To All the Boys: P.S I Still Love You" featured her 2017 song "Something Like This".
She's toured with acts such as Bon Iver, Of Monsters and Men, The Tallest Man on Earth and Highasakite. Gordi has also performed backup vocals for Bon Iver on their appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in September 2016.
Our Two Skins - Gordi's latest album received praise just after Gordi returned to her old job, offering her services to the frontline of Covid-19 patients. In an interview with The Australian Gordi spoke about juggling her music and her job working with Covid-19 crisis.
“I have a hard time with it, and I do worry from time to time that I’m not giving my full self to either, and maybe I’m doing a half-baked job at both,†she says. “But when I’m feeling more positive about it, I look at it as if medicine and music are almost like these two tides going in and out, and I just try and pick which way they’re moving and jump from one to the other.â€
Dr Gordi on more vaccines more gigs
Gordi has shows booked at the Sydney Opera House for the Vivid Festival although due to the lockdowns and the current outbreak it is unsure if these shows will go ahead. They're scheduled for 19th and 20th August. Maybe the show can go on but without an audience, as it has been done at the Opera House in the first lockdown/outbreak,
Dr Gordi has spent plenty of time in scrubs helping with Victoria's vaccine rollout and is looking forward to getting back to performing live shows.
“There’s so much loss of confidence in the music industry at the moment, and in any planning of tours and festivals,†Sophie says.
“The only way to not constantly lock down (cities) is to increase vaccination numbers, and the only way to do that is to get more vaccines. I think it has been seriously botched by the federal government in many ways. It’s costing the music industry money, and it’s going to start costing jobs and expertise, because people will start leaving the industry.â€
Other than the Opera House shows, Gordi has a few shows lined up with Australia's well loved Paul Kelly.
“It’s great that Paul has taken on two young female artists to be his support acts,†she says. “I’ve listened to Paul Kelly my entire life, and it’s definitely the tour that I’ve done where the most family members and friends have hit me up for free tickets.â€
